DAY 34--Unfinished Business

Although the day started with an early morning thunderstorm (before we set off), we had no rain all day, only clouds and nice moderate temperatures.
The scenery started out flat but changed to rolling hills, very green, with wetlands and lots of trees. We saw more swans, herons, and cranes. Lonna spotted a couple of bald eagles.
We rode into Lake Itasca State Park and stopped at the Visitor's Center. Lake Itasca is now considered the beginning of the Mississippi River. Two years ago, when we rode the Mississippi River Trail, we started in Minneapolis, so we missed the headwater region. Now we are making up for that. We rode a lovely bike trail from the Visitor's Center to the headwaters. There, you can walk across the Mississippi on stepping stones. While we were there, we saw another bald eagle soaring around and around. Today we also exceeded the mileage that we had ridden on the MRT (1887 miles). :)
We camped in the park, which was incredibly quiet at night.
