DAY 17--Down in the valleys

Today we had a relatively easy 75-mile ride, mostly flat with some gently rolling hills. The weather has been great (after thunderstorms overnight). We rode through the Beaverhead River Valley and then the Jefferson River Valley. The valleys are wide, with immense views and mountains on both sides. This is the wide open Montana that you always hear about. Lonna was so taken with it that she said "This would be like living in a postcard." Along the way we saw some preserved wetlands with pelicans, ducks, geese, and sandhill cranes.
We stopped at the Jefferson Valley Museum, housed in a restored historic barn. The museum was very well organized with an extensive collection reflecting the local history.
We ended the day riding through a stunningly gorgeous steep canyon, covered with pine trees, leading to our camp at the Lewis and Clark Caverns State  Park.
